PURPOSE:
To improve the health and quality of life among all American Indians through education, prevention and cessation of tobacco abuse, while respecting traditional practices and ceremonies associated with tobacco use.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- Have developed and implemented ten (10) trainings to tribal and urban Indian health center tobacco education or health programs.
- Have maintained the Community Tobacco Advisory Council (CTAC) workgroup that provides advise and guidance on the development and implementation of tobacco education and prevention activities for Arizona's American Indian population.
- Developed American Indian population specific tobacco education materials.
- Have provided data analysis for the youth tobacco surveillance in seven (7) of the community based tribal and urban Indian health center tobacco education programs.
- Have provided outreach through presentations and exhibit booths throughout Arizona and nationally.
- Participated as a member of the CDC Diversity and Disparities; and the Training Workgroups.
WORK PLANNED:
- Develop and implement a user friendly website.
- Develop and coordinate cessation efforts with the Women, Infant and Children's program at ITCA.
- Develop and implement trainings for the Tribes and urban Indian health centers.
- Provide networking opportunities for Tribes and urban Indian health centers.
- Develop a prevention curriculum supplement for Tribes and urban Indian health centers.
- Provide mini grants to Tribes in Arizona.
- Provide program evaluation assistance to Tribes in Arizona.
- Develop training, education and media materials for Tribes in Arizona.
- Collaborate with all ITCA programs on training and material development.
COMMUNITY TOBACCO ADVISORY COUNCIL (CTAC):
To assist ITCA, Inc. in implementing CTEPP goals the Community Tobacco Advisory Council (CTAC) was established as a Tobacco Working Group. The CTAC consists of the local projects, tribal representatives, service providers, and other interested groups and individuals. The CTAC assists CTEPP by advising and providing direction in the planning and implementation of tobacco education and prevention activities for Arizona's federally recognized tribes and their members. Where appropriate the CTAC also contributes to developing partnerships and coordinating services among the ITCA, Inc., Indian Health Service (IHS), AzTEPP, the participating tribes, and other agencies/organizations serving American Indians.
