Epidemiology is the basic science of public health. It is the study of the distribution and causes of disease and injury in a population. It enables public health professionals to improve health status, understand the causes of diseases, identify populations at risk and develop new prevention programs.

The Epi Center provides access to the following epidemiologic services in order to improve the health of participating Tribes:

  • Training in epidemiology, including tribal health surveillance systems
  • Technical assistance in planning and evaluating tribal health programs and systems
  • Coordinate data sharing between Tribes and other health entities
  • Assisting Tribes and IHS in data management and reporting requirements
  • Assisting, coordinating and facilitating public health response to disease outbreaks and clusters
  • Arranging meetings on health and data issues, and provide expert consultation to the Tribes
  • Assisting in diabetes data improvement projects for Tribes and IHS
